Vegan Choos or Do Vegans Choose Shoes....Confused

Lots of blogs have "About Me Pages", where they talk about them, unless I do a guest post and we talk about me. I did a guest blog over at Cara's "Fork and Beans" last week. Thank you again, Cara! Here's the link in cased you MISSED it. Welcome new followers who have come way of F and B.

Vegan bloggers "About Me Pages" usually detail their "journey to conscious eating". I almost wrote "journey to couscous eating"... but lots of vegans are also gluten free so I changed it back. Today I decided to be all inclusive, and not be a gluten for punishment bahahaha.
I don't have an "About Me Page". I have an "About Me Blurb". When I penned the "About Me Blurb", I felt that my passionate wish for vegan Jimmy Choo stilettos would convey my love of veganism. After all I had sacrificed the masterpiece of stiletto engineering on behalf of a cow. Alas, snake and lizard had to go too and before I knew it, my closet was filled with some beautiful cheapo cruelty free shoes I never would clomped a mile in before. Hannibal Lechter might have guessed Clarice's socioeconomic upbringing when he said, "good bag, cheap shoes.", but I doubt he could guess my new tootsies were vegan.

These are super comfy and you can find a myriad of cool vegan shoes over at Lulus.

"Those are not vegan wedgies, GiGi!"
Yeah, okay, Okey Dokey they're not vegan ;) Well Hannibal, all this shoe biz just makes me want to chow down on some fruit leather. How 'bout you Han?
I was going to make some for you dear reader, and they are pretty easy to make but do you know that it takes something like ten years to bake these fruit roll ups in a 250 degree oven?
Not everybody has all that time to wait around, except maybe the fantastic blogger who posted these babies and maybe Hannibal here but hey we're not letting him near an oven. Okey Dokey.

I really want to make these! See above link for recipe.

What a Croc!

Take a glance at my profile and you will see that I am not a fan of a certain Hu-gley rubber holed garden gnome shoe. Yes I realize a lot of chefs wear these "F" for Fashion shoes. A lot of people fall off escalators when they wear these plastic monstrosities. Did you know that? I mean I don't think I'll be wielding a Wusthorf or whipping up a frosting on an escalator any time soon, but still. Gag. Yes I am on my feet sometimes 13 hours a day, but my Chucks rule, as long as I put insoles in them. I also work with chef's gel mats which save my ass and my feet. Wouldn't it be great if they could save face too?

So imagine my surprise when I was surfing the net looking for a cruelty free pair of black ballet flats or some facsimile of to change into when I go ingredient shopping. I was looking for something versatile, something to don with a pair of skinny jeans or rolled up Levis or summer skirt. Lalalala. Ooooh look these are kind of cute and economical and Eco friendly. WTF? Noooo. Shield my eyes. They are a Croc. Can't be. Let me see them again. Yep my eyes do not deceive me. Those are a freakin' Croc!

It might be time to throw those Croc prejudices aside, GiGi. Well since Zappos does have free shipping returns I decided to give the Crocs a whirl.

I wore them to go get ingredients yesterday. They look cuter in person. The cool thing about them is that when I dropped organic powdered sugar on them I just wiped them right off with a wet nappy. Wore them in the kitch today and they were quite comfy. While at the Croc store I kind of liked another flat not suitable for the kitchen but great to knock around town with. Check 'em out. Kinda cool right? So what do you wear on your tootsies when you are cookin?

Hey Check out This Uber Cool Vegan Etsy Shop

We interrupt this Veganville sale to showcase another cool Etsy shop. Yes it's true I'm in need of some major Karma points and yes it would be a relief if that hex on me was removed sometime soon but that's not why I've decided to be super nice and use my blog to hype Baubles4knitwits.

Members of the Etsyveg team have all taken a pledge to support and promote one another's shops and feature one a week. The Etsyveg team consists of vegan and vegetarian artisans and shop owners. This week Baubles4knitwits is in the spotlight. B4K, (I just made that up), Jenn Hernandez' adorable and vibrant vegan Etsy shop features stitch markers and knitting accessories for all you crafty Bees out there. I don't know what a stitch marker is exactly. Does it keep time...like a stitch in time. I'm doing my best here. I am the rare Etsian who is not a domestic goddess in all areas. Knitting needles are just sticks to me. Just more things to keep from poking my eyes out with, but look how cute these are.

Bet they would look great as a hair adornment... I mean if they are not too close to my eyes

It seems like Jen excels in a lot of areas. She even brews her own kombucha and has her own cooking blog too- cookinvegan.com. Oh, shoot me now. And check out these beautiful tangerine swirl stitch markers. Wouldn't they make great earrings too? Or keychains even? See they are multi-purpose stitch markers.

And speaking of all Jen's nifty accessories did I tell you that I bought a new pair of spring- summer shoes? What do you think? They are super comfy and I think they'd be da bomb with my new hemp hair sticks.

Vegan Fashion "All Souped Up"

Summer was here for about four days. I'm not sure what autumn is really like in the Bay Area. The days get darker and sadly there's no fall foliage, one of the very things I miss about the right coast. I left this blog half finished and sitting unattended for a couple of days and summer reappeared. I actually shvitzed quite a bit on my 5 mile walk yesterday. Even without the usual ear muffs. Veganville was all excited to start up our soup classes too. I guess we could do cold soup but who knows what tomorrow will bring. The weather gods over here are flummoxed and gazpacho makes me gag. Screw the food. Let's do vegan fashion today. I say it's better to strip or layer than to add an ice cube to a hearty bean soup or boil a vegan vichyssoise. Check out this set of cruelty free fashion. I made it on Polyvore instead of soup.

And oh yes that's a vegan donut.

Vegan Baseball and Cool Shoes

My 16 year old nephew Sammy and his team the Mira Costa All Star Mustangs just clinched the Western Regional Senior Little League Baseball Championship! Yay! Right now they are headed to Bangor, Maine to play in the Senior Little League World Series!  We are one uber proud family! Sammy has been a phenom from the time he was born. He was hitting and fielding before he was two and his first words were golf, hockey, ball and bat. Sammy is not vegan, but this got me to thinking. What if Sammy was vegan? Where would he get a cruelty free baseball glove? Are there even any around? This reminded me of how when I was a kid playing competitive tennis many of my racquets were originally strung with my apologies - cat gut - until I more compassionately switched to something called bluestar nylon which to me had a similar feel. Anyway, with some trepidation, (what if nobody cares), I decided to google vegan baseball gloves. Much to my surprise I found a small factory where they actually customize vegan gloves. Get this, the factory Carpenter Trade Company http://www.carpentertrade.com/material.html is even located right near the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Scott Carpenter the owner, a graduate of RISI, purchased glove making machinery from a Rawlings factory that was closing down. He studied gloves extensively at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and founded the company in 2001.Scott has supplied major league ball players with gloves and you can find a page on how to fit the perfect glove on this fascinating site. Below is a blurb about Carpenter Trade's materials. Thank you, Scott!

FOR THE CRUELTY-FREE CONSCIOUS:

We use synthetics based on their performance; nevertheless, some of our customers are drawn to us for the simple fact that our gloves have never been made with animal leathers. Some web sources advertise “vegan” gloves which are actually cheap imported vinyl gloves made with leather laces and wool. While our gloves never use leather we do use wool for padding. Those wanting absolutely no animal materials can request all-synthetic padding from us; such gloves are the only vegan gloves available anywhere.

I wonder if Scott could make me some groovy new lace up boots or some great new kicks.

Larry's Jive Biscuits Are in the Bag, Baby!

While most people were taking in the fireworks, barbecuing "Smart dogs", munching on "Tings" or hiking Mt. Rushmore, that's right I was inside and online searching for a new cruelty free hand bag.

Cruelty Free BagsFashion Trends & Styles - Polyvore

Unpatriotic you say, I say who do you think boosts this fledgling U.S. economy while you are out hiking some gigantic president's head in North Dakota? Shopping is more American than baseball and Mom's apples, (my mom does not bake). Why look at the cost of these vegan Stella McCartney bags. Oh never mind, Stella is from England. Still, I'd like a Stella bag.
I heard it. I heard you say, "In your dreams, GiGi!"
How do you know? Maybe Stella will barter with me. I'll give Stella 2,000 vegan cheesecakes for one of her purses, maybe she'd like that.
Maybe I'll get a book advance, sometime soon.
Maybe I'll add a donate button on my blog. Pleeeeease donate I haven't bought a purse in two years!!!!
Women often say they would kill for a certain handbag. These are vegan, so there is no killing just coveting! I won't be an accessory to murder!
Oh well, you came here for some food. So what kind of food won't mess up a nifty new handbag? What's easy to wrap and carry around while you shop? What won't smell up your new pleather? I think Larry's Jive Biscuits are just the thing.
Larry concentrates before baking!
Larry's Jive Chive Biscuits (makes about a dozen biscuits, not a dozen Larrys.)
2.5 C unbleached flour, and more for dusting
1.5 t baking powder
1/4 t baking soda
1 1/4 t sea salt
1T sugar
1/4 C chopped fresh chives
1 stick Earth Balance cold and cut into small pieces
4 oz. Tofutti Cream Cheese
1 1/4 plain soy milk mixed with 11/4 T apple cider vinegar
Line a baking sheet with parchment. In a large bowl whisk together the first six ingredients. Using two forks or knives, (Larry likes knives), cut in the EB and Tofutti until the mix is coarse crumbs. Pour in the soy milk mixture and mix, ( a fork is good here), in until the dough comes together.
Add flour to a work surface and turn the dough on to it. Flour your hands and knead until the dough is smooth. Take out that trusty rolling pin and roll out the dough into a 11 by 8 inch rectangle, (go ahead use a ruler). Using a spatula lift the ends of the dough and fold into a rectangle. Now fold into thirds, (like a business letter). Now repeat the process. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Return the dough to the work surface and and roll like you did before. Give the dough one more turn and fold into a rectangle one last time, Thank God.
It'll be worth it I promise. Using a sharp knife, (careful Larry), trim and discard 1/4 inch from all sides, divide the rectangle into 12 equal squares or rectangles. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate for an hour. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Bake rotating the sheet half way through until the biscuits look good and golden. About 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Once cool, place in your new handbag. It is good sustenance for shopping, just jiving. Thanks, Larry!

Vegans Eat Like Crap Too

"WTF?" you ask.  How can that be?  Really, vegans can eat like crap? And the only reason you stopped by  my stupid blog you say, is because rather than pay an arm and a leg for insurance you thought you could find healthy options here. Bahahahaha. Well, not today sister. Put that arm cuff down and pick up some sea salt. Today is snackville time in Veganville.
Apparently posts like this annoy some fellow vegan bloggers. There's this one dude who chastises any vegan who does not inhale seaweed (nori to you) for breakfast. Now don't get me wrong, I love me some seaweed, but I don't like downing it with  five cups of black coffee in the morning. I gotta admit my coffee is not even fair trade. Larry just picked up some Don Juan hazelnut at Target for cheap. Maybe Mister Seaweed can get all self righteous about his morning greens and organic java beans. Maybe Mr. Seaweed makes more money off his blog than I do on mine.
I make nothing on this blog. Nothing. This blog has  taken over my life and sometimes I have to pay people to read it... Mommy!  Maybe his refrigerator handle didn't come off in his hand last week and he didn't have to attach it with duct tape. Maybe Mr. Blah Blah  Blogger's refrigerator doesn't looks like his 1990 Volvo that has duct tape all over the driver's side. Maybe Mr. Plant of the Ocean doesn't suffer from the Big D. and doesn't need comfort food once in a while.
Before you get all freaked out, yeah I ate like a stupid jerk last week. I did not, I assure you cross some ethical vegan line. Not one morsel from the slaughter industry crossed my lips!
Here's what I did have...
  • Half a tub of vegan cat cookies
  • that key lime pie from an earlier post
  • a dozen home made oatmeal raisin cookies
  • a brick of vegan sheeze with wasabi crackers
  • an entire bag of (are you overjoyed Mr. Seaweed) Trader Joe's vegan seaweed rice balls with extra sodium
  • Oh yeah, and a pint of vegan caramel ice cream
BTW aren't these aprons pretty?

White Album/ Vegan Fashion Foray

Sure, Veganville is about cookies and cakes and saving lots of animals and sometimes being annoying, but a girl cannot live on food alone. A gal needs fashion. Why without fashion, I'd be singing "Is That All There Is ?". Without fashion I'd be lost. Me and my buddy Peggy Lee would both be pushing up daisies. Yes Peggy Lee did a lot for doggies around the world when she did the score for "Lady and The Tramp " as well as the voice of (big surprise) Peg. All those feathers and furs, particularly during the Divine Miss Lee's white era would have provided a field day for any red paint weilding Peta member. Oh Peg, Peg, Peg...Why didn't you do right? I just know if Miss Lee were around today her closet would be different. Oh Miss Lee, you would have rocked these vegan duds! Perfect for your all white closet.
